No Matter Where You Go … There You Are

I wrote the original lyrics to this song 2003.The fire took the lyrics in 2019, along with a couple hundred others. My mind reached back for it. Rewritten January 29, 2026.

Verse 1
I packed up my sins in a cardboard box,
Labeled it later, taped it shut.
Changed my name on a barroom tab.
Said I was done with who I was.
But mirrors don’t forget your face,
And silence knows your truth.
Every mile just proved one thing,
I was still hauling you.
Pre-Chorus
Tried new towns, new skies,
New promises I couldn’t keep.
Chorus
No matter where you go, there you are,
Same old ghosts in a brand-new bar.
You can outrun roads, outrun scars,
But you can’t outrun your heart.
You can cross state lines, change the view,
Change your clothes, your point of view.
But no matter where you go, there you are,
Standing in your own shoes.
Verse 2
I chased the sunrise west of here,
Swore the past would lose my trail.
But it rode shotgun, quiet as hell,
Like it always does, like it always will.
I learned some things the hard way,
Lost some things I loved.
Turns out the hardest place to leave,
Is the one inside your blood.
Pre-Chorus
You can lie to the world all night,
But your soul knows what’s true.
Chorus
No matter where you go, there you are,
Same old ache in a different car.
You can drown regrets in neon stars,
But they still shine in the dark.
You can change your plans, change your crew,
Change the lie you’re telling you.
But no matter where you go, there you are,
With nothing left to lose.
Bridge
So I stopped running from my shadow,
Let it catch me in the light.
Sat down with every version of me,
And told them all goodnight.
If I’m gonna walk this road,
I’ll walk it honest, I’ll walk it scarred.
Final Chorus
No matter where you go, there you are,
But that don’t mean you can’t start.
You can heal the cracks, forgive the past,
Learn to live with your heart.
You can stay right here, face the truth,
Let the broken parts pull through.
’Cause no matter where you go, there you are.

And tonight that might be enough…

Outro

Yeah, no matter where you go,

there you are.
