I never knew why I was always drawn to the bars. Why I felt settled there. No one else did either. I now have to realize and accept this simple concept. It was where I started. Lillie Mae and a soldier named Woody.
Verse 1
My mama met my daddy under neon light,
She was pourin’ whiskey, he was passin’ through the night.
He wore a uniform, said he was headin’ home,
Had a ring on his hand, but she didn’t know.
Verse 2
Nine months later, I was somebody’s sin,
Somebody’s secret they couldn’t let in.
They gave me away to a love that was true,
Two open arms and a brand-new view.
Chorus
But I’ve always been pulled to the glow of a sign,
Stools and stories and closin’ time.
Maybe I’m lookin’ for a face I don’t know,
Maybe I just want somewhere I can go.
I don’t know why I keep comin’ back,
I just know I do.
Some things don’t leave you,
They run in the blood.
Verse 3
I didn’t just sit there, I stood behind the bar,
Counted out change, wiped down scars.
Learned how to listen, learned when not to speak,
Learned how to read what a man won’t say.
Verse 4
I’ve worked those nights when the jukebox cries,
Watched broken hearts in bar-top lines.
I’ve seen myself in a hundred souls,
All feelin’ lost, all tryin’ to be whole.
Chorus
And I’ve always been pulled to the glow of a sign,
Last call ringin’ in the back of my mind.
Maybe I’m searchin’ for somethin’ unnamed,
Maybe I’m just tryin’ to feel okay.
I don’t know why I keep comin’ back,
I just know I do.
Some things don’t leave you,
They run in the blood.
Bridge
I was loved, I was wanted, I won’t say I wasn’t,
But there’s a quiet in me that still wonders,
Why some nights feel familiar,
Like I’ve been here before.
Final Chorus
And I’ve always been pulled to the glow of a sign,
Neon hummin’ like a heartbeat mine,
Maybe it’s not the bar or the booze.
Maybe it’s the life I was born into,
I don’t blame anyone, I don’t hold a grudge.
I just tell the truth.
Some things don’t leave you,
They run in the blood
Outro
Yeah, some things don’t leave you

It runs in the blood.
